Emmanuel Macron has been widely commended for firmly grasping Donald Trump’s arm and promptly correcting his inaccurate statements during their recent interview.
The 47-year-old French president found himself in the position of fact-checking the 78-year-old Republican leader in real-time as Trump attempted to advance the narrative that Ukraine had exploited U.S. support in its defense against Russia. During a press conference in Washington, Trump asserted that it was now time for the United States to be reimbursed for its assistance.
In the interview, Macron addressed reporters, stating, “This war has cost all of us a significant amount of money, and this is the responsibility of Russia because the aggressor is Russia.”
Trump quickly interjected, confidently claiming that all European Union aid to Ukraine was provided in the form of loans: “Just so you understand, Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine. They will get their money back.”
At this point, Macron interrupted Trump by placing his hand on his wrist and clarifying, “No. To be frank, we contributed 60% of the total effort. Like the U.S., this includes loans, guarantees, grants, and we provided real money.”
He further elaborated: “If, at the end of the negotiations, they are ready to return it, that’s great. It may be considered a loan at the end of the day, but we have already paid for it.”
Trump responded somewhat sheepishly, “If you believe that, it’s OK with me,” before doubling down on his initial claim: “But they get their money back, and we don’t.”
