He Came Home from His Trip to Find a Newborn on the Table—and Two Notes Waiting Beside Her

A woman knocked on his door that day. „I’ve come for my baby,” she said flatly. Kyle simply looked at her. She stood tall, blonde, and thin, with obviously surgically enhanced features that spoke to a plastic surgeon’s careful art.

„Your what?” Kyle asked, confused.

„My baby,” she snapped impatiently. „I left her here two years ago? Sorry about that, but I was a bit stoned and my boyfriend lives on the next block over and I got confused about the address. You know how it is!”

„Sorry, I don’t know how that is because I’ve never abandoned a child on anyone’s doorstep,” Kyle said coldly. „I’d get a move on if I were you, or I’ll call the police right now.”

„Now look here,” the woman said sharply. „I figured I made a mistake about a week later when Burt didn’t take my calls anymore, but now I need that baby back!”

„You need her?” asked Kyle angrily. „What do you need her for exactly?”

„Burt just got himself a Major League contract,” the woman said. „That baby’s gone make sure some of those millions land in my bank account!”

Kyle ran the woman off his property, but he had a feeling he hadn’t seen the last of her. He was right about that feeling. A week later he was summoned to family court. A Miss Cherish Vegas was contesting his adoption of baby Lily.

Suddenly, Kyle found himself showered with injunctions, visited by Social Services at odd hours of the day or night, and his friends and co-workers were being questioned about him. Cherish really meant to get her hands on those millions somehow!

Finally, the day of the hearing arrived on the calendar. Kyle nervously handed over Lily to the social worker for the duration of the hearing and walked into the courtroom. Cherish sat there, of course, and a tall man with Lily’s same blue eyes sat on her side of the court. This could only be the famous Burt himself!

Cherish cried and sniveled dramatically and told the judge how much she loved and missed her baby, and how her wild college days, now long past and deeply regretted, had led her to place her in Kyle’s care temporarily.

The judge looked down at the papers in front of her. „By in his care, you mean on his porch, isn’t that right, Miss Vegas?” asked the judge pointedly.

Cherish flushed red at the question. „Well, I’m still her mama! No one can deny that fact!” she screamed.

The judge looked toward Burt next. „You sir, you are the father in question?”

Burt lumbered to his feet awkwardly and said, „I guess I must be, yeah…”

The judge fixed him with a flinty eye across the courtroom. „Are you prepared and able to take on the parental responsibilities for this child?”

Cherish screamed out, „You bet he is, judge, he just signed a three million dollar contract to play ball!”

„Oh!” cried the judge. „Finally, the truth is out in the open! Tell me, Miss Vegas, what name did you give your daughter originally?”

„Name?” asked Cherish, confused by the question. „Why, she’ll have her daddy’s name, since he’ll be paying child support now!”

Kyle stood up from his seat. „Your honor,” he said clearly. „May I address the court directly?”

„Yes, Mr. Greenbecker,” said the judge. „Please do so.”

„Ma’am, my daughter’s name is Lily, and she does have her father’s name, mine. Since the moment that child came into my life I’ve loved her completely, and she loves me back in return.”

At that moment, Lily, who had been playing with the social worker’s necklace, noticed that Kyle was standing up across the room. „Daddy!” she cried out and stretched out her little arms toward him.

„Well, ladies and gentlemen, it seems to me that this case has been decided by the principal party herself,” the judge said. „I hereby overturn all claims of custody of the child Lily Greenbecker and confirm Kyle Greenbecker’s custody and adoption of her permanently.”

That night, Kyle celebrated his victory in court, and he and Lily spent the evening catching lightning bugs together in the garden behind their home. „Stars!” cried Lily happily. For Kyle, though, the brightest star of all remained his little girl standing beside him.
