I Heard My Daughter Whisper ‘I Miss You, Dad’—He’s Been Gone For 18 Years

I buried my husband when our daughter, Susie, had reached only three months old.

He never witnessed her crawl across the floor. Never heard her laugh out loud. Never held her hand on her first day of school. From the moment he passed away, the two of us stood together against the entire world. I learned how to be strong because no alternative existed, how to stretch one paycheck into two, how to smile through exhaustion, how to answer questions like „Where’s my dad?” without falling apart completely.

Susie grew up knowing her father only through stories, photographs, and a handful of old voicemail messages I could never bring myself to delete. She grew gentle and thoughtful, more introspective than most children her age tend to be. Sometimes I’d catch her standing quietly beside his photo resting on the mantel, her fingers tracing the frame’s edges as though it formed a doorway of some kind.

Even so, I never imagined what would unfold when she turned eighteen.

It happened on an ordinary evening. The dishes sat finished in the rack. The television murmured softly in the background. As I walked past the hallway, I heard Susie’s voice, low and careful, coming from the old landline phone we almost never used anymore.

„Okay, Dad,” she whispered into the receiver.

A pause followed.

„I miss you too.”

I froze completely in place.

My heart slammed so hard I thought I might actually faint. Before I could utter a word, Susie noticed my presence. Her eyes widened instantly. She hung up right away, the click of the receiver echoing through the quiet house around us.

„Who were you speaking with?” I asked, forcing my voice to remain steady.

„No one important,” she said too quickly. „Wrong number, that’s all.”

She slipped into her room and closed the door gently behind her, somehow that gentleness hurt more deeply than if she had slammed it shut.

That night, sleep refused to come. My thoughts raced in tight, panicked circles through my mind. Susie had never lied to me in that particular way before. Fear and curiosity tangled together until I couldn’t bear it any longer. I walked to the kitchen and checked the landline’s call log carefully.

The number appeared unfamiliar to me.

With trembling fingers, I dialed it back.

It rang three times through.
